Peru....Cusco to Machupiccu and back again

The most amazing part of our trip so far!!

all seasons in one day 26 °C
View Around the World in 7 months! on HANandHAM's travel map.

So the last time se wrote to you all we had just arrived in Cusco, Peru which is a beautiful city. The city is full of history, a bit touristy but you ccan avoid that easily. Here we are staying in the nicest Hostel yet! iT has fantasticv iews over te city! We speant three days exploring the city and the set out on our four day Jungle Trek to Machupicchu!

We started our four day trek getting picked up from our Hostel at 8am, in a group of 9 people (a family of 4 Koreans, 2 Americans, a Swedish guy and us!). The minibus ride took 4 hours going up into the mountains until we got dropped off, put our cycling gear on and cycled down the mountain, with sheer drops either side. There were lovely views with a slight drizzle, clearing as we descended. We cycled for about 4 hours, had a quick beer and continued cycling through the jungle, where everyone’s legs got attacked by mosquitoes (I have about 40 bites, which are very itchy now!). The ride was up and downhill, but the majority was downhill...great fun! That evening, after cycling for 8 hours we had dinner a few beers and crashed out ready to be up at 6am the next day.
On the second day we had breakfast at 6am then set of trekking through the jungle, picking and eating lots of mangoes on the way (couldn’t get much fresher...and I must say the best mangoes I have ever had...MUM´s YOU WOULD HAVE LOVED THEM!!!) In total I think we had about 8 each on that day. After trekking for 4 hours uphill, we stopped off at a familiar house, a few monkeys entertaining and fresh coffee that they grow from their plantations. After we continued for a couple of hours, had lunch and then set off on one of the Inka Trails, beautiful views, but we where walking along a thin track with 1500m drops on one side...quite scary!!!! A few more mangoes and mosquito bites later we stopped off at another familiar house, passing lime trees, banana trees, avocado trees and then arrived at some hot springs at about 4pm. They where much needed as our muscles were aching, anyway we plunged into all different temperature pools, chilling out in a valley between huge mountains...so beautiful! After about an hour chilling out we walked a few hours more and arrived at our hostel at about 6pm, very tired and hot!
On the third day we got up a little later, having breakfast at 8am, then walking through water falls, huge gorges and beautiful scenery. We had lunch at a lovely little restaurant, sitting under a huge avocado tree, which where picked a sliced for our lunch! Our aim was to walk to Ascallientes, the town at the bottom of Machpicchu. The only way to get there was to walk along the old train tracks (at this point we had very tired legs and the Koreans where finding it difficult to keep up...haha). We arrived at the town at about 4.30pm, slept for a few hours, had dinner and went to bed ready for the final day up to Machu Picchu.
On the fourth day we woke up at 4am, ready to trek at 4.30am. We set off in our group in the pitch black up the mountain to Machu Picchu. It took about 1 and a half hours, so got there for about 6am, for sunrise. However as the cloud was so low, we couldn’t see the sunrise and hardly see Machupicchu. After about 1 hour the clouds cleared and Mach Picchu was revealed...so beautiful, tranquil and just an amazing thought of how the Incas made this their home back in the 1200s.
Just after lunch we came down the mountain, had some lunch and got the train back to Cusco, arriving back at 10pm last night.
We are feeling very tired today, had a lovely fresh fruit breakfast and scrambled eggs.
The Koreans we met on the trip invited us to visit South Korea, which we are thinking of doing once we get to China. The dad was such a good laugh and a lecturer at Seol University. The first thing he said to us was ´Korea is the best country because I live their...ha´, and also he said his wife is the best cook in Korea, so sounds like a good reason to visit!!
I hope this gives you a little insight into our exhausting but spectacular last 4 days. We have only got one more week in South America, which we have loved so much so far, so diverse and beautiful.

We are going to stay in Cusco for three more nights and thenhead to Santiago, Chile ready for our flight to New Zealand on the 13th of December.

Love to you all

Salta (Argentina) to Lake Titicaca (Bolivia)

Bolivia was an experiance to say the least!!

all seasons in one day

Hello Everyone!

So the next part of our travels took us from BA to Salta in northern Argentina, another 16 hour bus trip! Here we speant a few days just chilling out in the sleepy town and by the pool in our hostel. One night we had a BBQ with the hostel and met lots of people, with plenty of advise for our ongoing travel.

On the second night we caught a bus with a Dutch girl and four Irish to the boarder with Bolivia. When we arrived here we had an 8 hour wait for the train (which only runs twice a week) so it was nice to be in a big group. The train ride was amazing, we went across beautiful destert terrian and through the middle of tiny villages. The train took 9 hours and we arrived to Uyuni at 12pm.

The next day we went on an all day trip to the Salt Planes, has to be one of the highlights so far! In our jeep there was another english couple ( Danielle spoke perfect Spanish, a bonus) and an Israli guy. The trip took us to various sites around the planes including a train cemetary, a village where the salt is made edible, an extinct volcano in the middle of the falts, the Fish island (full of Cacti) and finally to a hotel made of Salt (the beds didn't look comfy!!). It was a great day and we had fun taking some silly pictures due to the lack of perspective!!

The next day we took a 12 hour bus to La Paz...this was very interesting!!! The roads in Bolivia are made from sand, there are no loos on the bus, the window kept opening, it was freezing so we were in sleeping bags, the lady behind us didn't have a nice aroma, a truck come off the 'road' so we had to turn around adding 3 hours to the trip and we had a flat tyre, adding an hour!! But hey ho it is all part of the experiance, we didn't do much sleeping but it was a giggle.

We decided not to stay in La Paz so caught a local bus to a town called Copacabana, at the edge of Lake Titicaca. It is a small, touristy town with a nice relaxed feeling about it. It was also very cheap, a private room costing just 2.50 pounds a night and a set menu 1.80!! We took a trip the next day to the sun island on Lake titicaca, a 3 hour boat ride to a beautiful isolated island. Unfortunately we coudln't do the 3 hour hike as I was feeling terrible so we climbed for a bit and then chilled out on the beach by the lake for a few hours. That night we realised that it gets bitterly cold...I had to get the thermals out!!!

The next day we caught a but to Cusco, PERU, where we are now x

Iguazu Falls - Buenos Aires

sunny 37 °C
View Around the World in 7 months! on HANandHAM's travel map.

Hello Everyone,

Sorry it has been a while since our last update but we have really packed it in over the last few weeks.

So we have now been away for just over three weeks, last time we wrote on the blog we were just leaving amazing Rio for Iguazu. The 24 hour bus ride was fine, we had regular breaks and it actually seemed to go quickly. When we got to the Brazilian town of Foz De Igauzu we had to cross the boarder to the Argentinian town of Puerto Iguau. Here we sayed in a HI hostel which was nice as it had a pool and the town was full of good steak restaurants. The next day we went to the Brazilian side of the Iguazu falls which are truely amazing. We walked along the edge of the dramatic falls getting soaked by spray (a welcome releif from the scorching heat..37 degrees C)! The water was the highest it had been that year which meant the falls were even more spactacular. We also saw many wierd and wonderful insects and animals, incluiding one that looked like a skunk which spent half the day running away from only to find out they are harmless sweet natured things!!HAHA

The next day we went to the Argentinian side of the falls which were a little more expensive but definately worth it. You could see far more of the falls and take two treks, one underneath (getting soaked) and one over the top of them where they fall. That afternoon we took the train to what is called the "Devils Throat", it where the largest mass of water comes together and cascades hundreds of meters! This was the best part of the falls, clouds of water were going high up into the sky due to the sheer power of the water and rainbows were forming where the water met as it fell. We shall upload pictures so you can see!

The next day we took a bus to Buenos Aires, tis was better than last time as we got meals, wine and Champagne!!!!!BRILLIANT!! Buenos Aires is a great city, the first day we took a walk around the Plaza de Mayo which is where weekely demonstrations are held infront of the government buildings and soaked up the Cafe culture with a few beers. In the evening we went to the Opera to see Mozart´s "Don Giovanni" and managed to blag the best seats in the house for just 4 pounds each!! On the Sunday we went to two markets one in San Telmo, selling antiques and another in Recolata, selling handmade goods. We also went to the famous cemetry where Evita is burried. On our last day in BA we went to the posh part called Palermo and the new part of the town. Puerto Madearo. Both were very pretty although quite European.

We then caught a bus to Salta in North Argentina, which we shall save for the next installment....

We hope you are all well,

Lots of love Hannah and Hamish x x x x

P.S Dad (Bill) maybe you could print these blog bits out for Grandad to see if he doesn´t have access to the internet x

Hello from Brazil!!!

sunny 29 °C
View Around the World in 7 months! on HANandHAM's travel map.

Hello everyone,

We thought we should add something to the blog to let you know that we are ok :) So far we have been to Sao Paulo (which was an eye opener!!!). The Grand Prix was on so we went down to the track to watch it on a big screen with all the locals, they were all shouting for Massa and we were quitely supporting Hamilton. We met some young Brazillian guys there who spent a year studying in Brighton, which was random, but we were all happy with the outcome. The atmosphere was fantastic, the sun was shining and the beer (yes Hannah is now a beer drinker) was 60p!!!!!!!!

So, the next day we headed off to a beautiful litle colonial town along the coast towards Rio called Paraty...it was so beautiful. We caught a local but to some waterfalls where Hamish slide down on his bum, we trekked around in the jungle for a bit and then took a walk to the place where they make the Brazilian rum Cachaca, we tasted some and even smelling it made our noses burn!! But they use it to make Caiprinhas, which are very nice out here but also very strong. We stayed in a hostel there for two nights and then went off round the coast on another bus for 4 hours to Rio.

Rio is amazing, we are staying in a 6 bed dorm with some great people and the hostel is full of nice people so we have been out most nights with them and the local people who work here. We spend all day on the beach as the weather is great. Yesterday we went to see a Favela, the Statue of Christ, Sugar Loaf mountains and the palce where the Carnival is. We got to try on the Carnival cotumes which was so much fun.

We are leaving Rio on Monday by a 24 hour bus ride to the Igassu Falls ( it´s not as bad as it sounds as the buses are very nice)!

So we shall speak to you all soon, probably when we are in Argentina as I am not sure we will have internet in the next place...

We hope you are all well,

Love Han and Ham x x
